Pelvic Ultrasound Scan

Transvaginal or abdominal scan:

The pelvic organs comprise the uterus, tubes and ovaries. Assessment of the uterus and ovaries is an important and integral part of fertility investigation. The tubes are not usually visible unless special media is used to distend it like Saline, air or Sono-view.
Assessment of the uterus wall is necessary to exclude fibroids and of the uterine cavity to exclude intracavitry fibroids or polyps which can compromise conception success rate. Pelvic scans allows measuring of the endometrium and comparing it to the day of the cycle which helps diagnosis of ovulation problems. Assessment of the ovaries helps to assess ovarian reserves and exclude cysts.
Transvaginal ultrasound is more accurate than abdominal ultrasound to visualize these organs and does not require full bladder.
