Sophie Bird BSc (Hons) M. Med. Sci (Merit)
Lab Manager

Sophie Bird joins us here at The Fertility & Gynaecology Academy in 2018 as Lab Manager. She brings with her a wealth of experience, extensive biopsy expertise and a passion for excellence.

Sophie obtained her degree, BSc. Hons, in Fertility and Embryo Development at UCL before gaining her Masters degree in Assisted Reproduction Technology. She is recognised by the Health and Care Professionals Council as a State Registered Clinical Embryologist.

Sophie began her career in embryology in 2008 at The Bridge Centre before working at Guy’s Assisted Conception Unit as a Senior Embryologist under Virginia Bolton.

Sophie also has experience working as a secondment embryologist. She is both ICSI and Embryo Biopsy trained. Her interests include genetic testing and monozygotic twinning in IVF.


Romualdo Polese BSc MSc
Senior Embryologist

Romualdo joined the team at The Fertility & Gynaecology Academy as a Senior Embryologist in 2019. He graduated with Honours from Federico II University of Naples in Developmental Biology.

Romualdo is an experienced embryologist who started his career in 2012 and has worked all over Europe, including Italy, Germany and Spain. He works sensitively with patients and has extensive experience in embryo biopsy and has a strong passion for research in Embryology.

When he is not at work, Romualdo’s hobbies include keeping fit and film trivia. He also has a flair for languages, speaking both Italian and Spanish.


Plamena Dimitrova Bsc (Hons), MSc (Hons)
Embryologist

Plamena Dimitrova joined us The Fertility & Gynaecology Academy as a clinical embryologist in 2018. She is dedicated to ensuring the best outcomes for all of our patients and her diligence and professionalism contributes to high patient satisfaction. She is an ICSI practitioner and her special interests are cryobiology and PGD.

Plamena has a strong education in embryology: In 2012 she completed her Bachelor’s degree in Molecular Biology at the University of Sheffield. She went on to complete her Master’s degree in Reproductive Biology at Plovdiv University, in Bulgaria, whilst already working as an embryologist.

She has worked as a clinical embryologist for over 4 years, and in 2018 achieved the second highest mark in clinical embryology in the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE) exam, held in Barcelona.


Courtney Donkin
Nurse

Courtney joined The Fertility & Gynaecology Academy in April 2018 and we’re delighted to have her on the team. She enjoys working closely with patients and her warm, bubbly personality helps them to feel at ease. Courtney oversees the entire patient journey, from explaining how to take medication, to assisting Dr Gorgy in theatre during egg collections and embryo transfers.

Originally from Australia, Courtney received a Bachelor of Nursing from the University of Newcastle where she specialised in critical care nursing and theatre roles, working across anaesthetics, recovery and scrub/scout. Additionally, she has a Graduate Certificate in Anaesthetics and Recovery Nursing from the University of Tasmania.

After completing her training Courtney moved into a clinical nurse specialist/nurse manager role where she oversaw 20 theatres and all specialties. In 2016 she made the move to the UK to pursue fertility nursing as it combined her passion for theatre and patient contact.


Jeana Alaba
Lead Nurse

Jeana is our Lead Nurse, having joined the team at The Fertility and Gynaecology Academy in October 2018. Warm, passionate and hardworking, she’s a fantastic addition to the team, and uses her extensive experience to ensure the highest levels of patient care and satisfaction are met.

Jeana graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the Philippines. She began her career as a gynaecology nurse whilst living in the UAE. Since then, she has acquired years of experience working as a fertility nurse and has spent time at both Hammersmith Hospital and also the prestigious Queen Charlotte’s Hospital in London.


Lai Chee
Senior Nurse

Lai joined The Fertility and Gynaecology Academy in October 2018 as Senior Nurse and she’s proven herself both a quick learner and core member of the team. Our patients benefit from Lai’s skills and dedication to her work. On a day to day basis Lai can be found attending to patients and assisting Dr Gorgy with clinical work.

Lai qualified as a Registered General Nurse in 1994 from the Princess Alexander and Bartholomew’s College of Nursing in London. Since graduating, Lai has worked across a wide range of areas, including paediatrics, research and investigation units. She also has years of experience as a fertility nurse in NHS hospitals.
