Accessing The Latest Data On Fertility Treatment: Why Knowledge Is Power

For anyone exploring treatment options for infertility, having access to the latest data on fertility treatment can be empowering. It is one of the most valuable tools you can bring into your fertility journey. When you have access to the latest data, you can ask better questions, understand your options, and make confident decisions about your care.

Whether you’re a single individual considering parenthood, or a couple struggling to conceive, having accurate, up-to-date data about fertility treatment is essential. In this article, we’re going to take a look at the different ways you can gather this information, from talking to trusted medical professionals, to researching figures on the Human Fertilisation & Embryology Authority (HFEA). We’re also going to look at the different ways you can use this information to help make informed choices about your care.

Why knowledge is power

Fertility treatment is a big investment. And it comes with considerable physical, emotional, and financial commitments. Having accurate information helps guide your research and manage your expectations. When you understand how fertility treatments work and what the success rates mean, you can start to make proactive decisions about your future fertility care.

Understanding what affects fertility

There are a number of factors that can affect your current and future fertility. It’s important to consider your age, egg quantity, and potential egg quality. It’s also important to consider other factors like your lifestyle, health conditions, immune system, and even your genetics. By learning how each of these could affect your fertility, you can start to make decisions based on your individual circumstances.

Understanding what affects fertility treatments

Several practical factors should inform your treatment decisions. First, consider treatment availability: Are there reputable fertility clinics in your area that offer comprehensive fertility testing and treatment options? Second, evaluate their treatment approach: Does the consultant have extensive experience? Are you looking for someone ith very specific expertise? Can they customise their approach to your individual needs?

Dr Gorgy, Fertility Consultant at The Fertility & Gynaecology Academy explains: “Patient empowerment is central to our approach. We encourage people to thoroughly research their options, come prepared to ask questions, and raise any concerns. The more informed our patients are about their options, the more confident they feel about their treatment decisions.”

Finding reliable sources of information

If you want accurate information, then it’s important to find reliable resources. The best way to do this is often by combining online research with one-on-one consultations. This ensures you have a clear picture of what fertility treatment data is available and how it applies to your individual circumstances. Let’s take a closer look.

Using the HFEA dashboard

One option is online research. The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) is an independent regulator. It is responsible for overseeing fertility and embryology clinics in the UK. The HFEA Dashboard is a highly reliable source of fertility treatment data. It provides up-to-date detailed information about patient demographics, treatment types, and treatment outcomes by looking at data from every licensed fertility clinic in the UK. You can use it to compare clinics, explore national trends, and understand success rates within a broader context but you can also use it to really narrow down the most relevant information for you. It is important to be careful when interpreting the results of the clinics on the HFEA website as different clinics have different cohorts of patients. This means different clinics report on different age groups and underlying complex fertility problems e.g. repeated implantation failure, recurrent miscarriage, immune system imbalance. We are particularly proud of our success rates considering that our specialism is treating complex cases of recurrent IVF failure (IVF treatment that has been repeatedly unsuccessful at other clinics).

Success rates

According to HFEA, across all age groups, the birth rate per fresh embryo transferred in 2023 was 25% and 31% pregnancy rate per fresh embryo transferred in 2023. However, it may be more appropriate to refine this to your specific age bracket. For example, for women aged 38-39 these figures drop to 19% birth rate per fresh embryo transferred in 2023 and 26% pregnancy rate per fresh embryo transferred in 2023*.

Talking to trusted fertility specialists

Another option is to talk to a trusted fertility specialist by booking a consultation. They can help explain what statistics are available, what they mean for fertility patients in general, and what they mean for you specifically. A fertility doctor can help you understand what fertility challenges you might face, based on your individual circumstances. They can also explain what treatment options are available, and which ones might offer the best chance of success.

By asking questions and discussing your concerns, you can get a better understanding of fertility treatments and what your fertility journey might look like.

Demographic shifts

Fertility treatment options have expanded significantly to meet the evolving needs of patient demographics. Fertility treatment has become increasingly inclusive. Whether you’re single, in a same-sex or heterosexual relationship, we have access to more treatment pathways than ever before. There are also a broader range of fertility treatment options available for women over 40, people with pre-existing medical conditions, and individuals with a history of recurrent miscarriage.

  • Single individuals: Fertility treatment options for single individuals often involve egg freezing, donor sperm, donor eggs, or surrogacy – each of which come with unique medical and emotional considerations.
  • Female same-sex couples: Fertility treatment options for female same-sex couples could include Intrauterine Insemination (IUI), reciprocal IVF, or donor conception – giving both partners the opportunity to participate in their family-building journey.
  • Male same-sex couples: Fertility treatments options for male same-sex couples typically include partial surrogacy and full surrogacy – each of which come with legal, medical and donor-selection considerations.
  • Aging first-time parents: Women over 40, especially those with underlying medical conditions or a complex history of recurrent miscarriage, require detailed fertility testing and tailored treatment plans.

As you can see, different patients require different approaches. When you explore the latest data on fertility treatment, pay close attention to how it’s broken down by age group, relationship status, and treatment type. That way, you can ensure that the data you’re looking at reflects your individual circumstances and needs.

Why knowledge, data and context matter

Knowing where to find reliable fertility information is empowering. It helps you better understand your treatment options, expected outcomes, clinic performance, and success rates. However, statistics need context. While national statistics can offer valuable insight, they only offer a part of the story. Your individual outcomes depend on factors like age, medical history, and many other factors specific to you and your partner. Here at The Fertility & Gynaecology Academy, we offer a wide range of fertility testing treatment and options. We’d be happy to talk to you about our experience, specialist areas, and success rates.
